Choosing name have different motivations, some people just like the form of the word, some other care about its meaning. Nationalistic or Religious impetuses have key role in naming the babies.
Nationalist people name their babies using Iranian name honoring their Dignitaries.
Religious people have same idea but their Authorities are usually Prophets, Ascetics, Leaders, Priest, Clergymen...
Also In some Islamic Narratives its recommended to use Imams' and Prophet names for Spiritual advances.
And about me, My name's Mahdi and I love it. It means Guided. I feel I have always been guided despite my numerous errors.
